The staff of the Tennessee Tech
Minority Affairs Office housed in
the Leona Lusk Officer Black
Cultural Center, welcomes you.
~
The Black Cultural Center was
established in 1989 as a place
where African-American students could find
support among their peers at Tennessee Tech.
The center opened its doors officially in August
1990.
In 1964, Tennessee Technological University
admitted its first black students. Before then,
black residents of Middle Tennessee had only
one choice if they wanted to attend a public
university - Tennessee State University. They
faced the economic and logistical obstacles of
commuting to Nashville and beyond for higher
education.
Recognizing those obstacles, Tennessee Tech
students and a board of administrators and faculty chose to rename the university's Black Cultura l Center in the spring of 1996 in honor of
its first black alumnus, Leona Lusk Officer, who
made numerous sacrifices to obtain something
that many today take for granted. Officer earned
her degree in elementary education, graduating
in 1965.
The Leona Lusk Officer Black Cultural Center
offers students an opportunity to learn more
about African American culture through books,
photographs and works of art. It is a place to
expand a student's cultural awareness and
knowledge; a place to relax, study, and have fellowship with friends; a place to keep abreast of
African-American news via related periodicals.
The Black Cultural Center sponsors various
cultural, social, educational, and career-related
activities to further expand the potential of future
leaders.
