On August 1, 1982, Alabama played the first sell-out concert at the new Hooper Eblen Center with 11,210 people in attendance. It was their first performance at Tech and they closed with three encores. The band was so well received they returned again in March of 1983, with singer Randy Owens saying "If we don’t do anything else, this is still the best college we've played to in Tennessee.”
University Programming Committee Director Ron Rami recieved an award for the attendence and sold-out Alabama concert. S.O.L.O. concerts, held by Tennessee Tech in the 2000s fill approximately 6,000 seats and The Hoop only holds a capacity of 9,280 students now.
