Winners of the first Tennessee Tech History Day Competition, 1980.

History Day

History Day was sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Tennessee Tech started participating in 1980 with the coordinators being Dr. Stuart Stumpf and Dr. William Schrader of the Tennessee Tech history department.

It was a district-wide event for students in junior-high and high school were they could enter an individual paper, an individual or group project, or an individual or group performance based on the designated subject. The subjects would require critical thinking and research regarding a historical period or subject. Winners would advance to the statewide History Day competition.

It is unknown as to when the Tennessee Tech History Department stopped participating but it is known that they participated at least into 1986.

Constitution Day

Constitution Day is a celebration of the formation and signing of the U.S. Constitution by thirty-nine of the fifty-five delegates to the Constitutional Convention on September 17, 1787. It is also designated Citizenship Day to focus on the rights and responsibilities of citizens under the Constitution.

At Tennessee Tech, Constitution Day is named in honor of Dr. Nolan Fowler, a retired history professor at TTU who taught constitutional development from 1962 to 1979. This annual event, which first started in 2005, was and continues to be sponsored by Fowler’s $150,000 Nolan Fowler Endowment for Constitutional Development to establish the Constitution Day Celebration at TTU.

The History Department continues to help advertise and put together this event as the annual observance of Constitution Day reflects his commitment and passion for teaching the U.S. Constitution to students as well as his drive to allow the program to bring in nationally renowned speakers every year.
