Sid Hatfield got my signature and then he looked at me and he said “Morris, I want you to know that you’re, you’re, you’re going to be the only Black kid in the program.” Now, then you talking about knees starting to shake. That was scary. And again, Cookeville was home, but Tennessee Tech was a completely different, different place. It created some anxieties for me. And again, knowing that I was the first, the kind of the trailblazer in baseball, it created some anxieties. But the one thing that I did learn was that in getting into the athletic environment, with a lot of the guys, you know, we were there to play baseball. And I can say that the teammates that I was associated with, they helped to make things a lot easier. And, which helped to resolve some of my fears at the time. But then again, I had this big environment on campus that I was going to have to navigate and that in and of itself was still a different story. And most of us here were part of some athletic team, either football, basketball, track, and myself in baseball. So we kind of formed our own little groupings and I can remember when the quad was over on the old part of campus. The cafeteria was one of the main center points. You know, I remember us getting together a lot of times there just if nothing more keeping each other company. And I think that went a long way to help us. Transcript of the clipping: Morris Irby: I can remember one of the favorite things we’d do, I’d come out on campus on Sunday afternoon and I would lead a group of students, maybe 10 or 15, back out to my house in West Cookeville where my mom would fix a big meal or us. I was kind of like the pied piper. I’d have everybody, we’d be marching. Course you know, we didn’t have cars back then, so we’d walk about a mile from campus to home. But walking out to my mother’s for a Sunday cooked meal and let me tell you, that wasn’t something that was turned down at the time, a student away from home and getting a homecooked meal. Hey, that was uptown. So, though, I have a lot of fond memories on those, on those Sunday afternoons. We’d get together in that little house and oh, we’d be jumping.
