But officials wanted to wait for just the right time to celebrate. Black History Month seemed the perfect opportunity, and the dedication of the Leona Lusk Officer Black Cultural Center has been set for 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23. The family of Leona Lusk Officer will join members of the Tennessee Tech family as the center is re-named. During the dedication, her children, Nancy Officer Hancock of Detroit, Mich., and Steve Officer of Smithville, will receive a plaque identical to one that will be on pennanent display in the center. A reception in the Executive Suite follows the ceremony. Everyone is welcome to attend both events. 'Tm very honored to name the Black Cultural Center after Mrs. Officer," says Tonia Duncan-Rivers, director of the Office of Mino1ity Affairs at Tennessee Tech, which is housed in the Black Cultural Center. "I feel that without her doing what she did, none of us probably would be here." Officer spent 20 years in pursuit of her bachelor's degree in education, a milestone for herself and her family as well as for the university. An elementary teacher, she attended classes in the summer, enrolling first at the Ag1icultural and Indust1ial State Normal School - now Tennessee State University - in 1945. Although Officer lived in Sparta, the Nashville institution was the only option open to her as an African Ame1ican. For the next 19 years, she commuted to the school whenever she could. When Tennessee Tech desegregated in 1964, Officer enrolled. She was then 47 years old and one of only three black students on campus. She had been jobless since 1962, when she was laid off for not yet having obtained a college degree. She graduated in 1965 and eventually found work teaching home-bound students in McMinnville. "She wanted to have a degree that she completed, and at the time, in order to get a job and hold a job, you needed to have a degree. That made her want it even more." Following in her mother's footsteps, Hancock is an elementary teacher in Detroit. She earned a bachelor's degree from Tennessee State University, and she is married to Wiley V. Hancock. The Officers' son, Steve, also graduated from Tennessee State University and has a master's degree from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. He works with the Dekalb County Extension Service. He will attend the dedication with his wife, Cathy, and their two sons, Bryan and David, along with relatives from Sparta and Cookeville. "I wish the dedication could have been done when [Officer] was alive," says Hancock. "She deserved all of this." The Black Cultural Center was established in 1989 as a place where Tennessee Tech's black students could find the kind of supp01t among their peers Officer didn't have. The center houses a collection of African art and a small lending librar·y of works by black authors. It serves as a student lounge, study room and gathering place and also sponsors a variety of activities throughout the year, including visiting speakers, seminars, support groups and a book club. The choice to dedicate the center in Officer's name was made by the university's students. "She's a ptime example [of persistence]," says Carole Kuhnert, chair of the committee in charge of naming the center and assistant to Tennessee Tech President Angelo Volpe. "I think she's an inspiration to any student." The roots of Black History Month go back over 70 years to Negro History Week, established in 1926 by Carter Woodson. Woodson, an accomplished Harvard University alumnus, hoped all Ameticans would take the opportunity to reflect on their ethnic roots and develop respect for diverse backgrounds. In those days, when rural roads were little more than wagon trails and reliable transportation scarce, students got to school catch as catch can. High school diplomas were often considered a luxury. Leona wanted to be a teacher. She first enrolled in college, at what would become Tennessee State, in the spring of 1945. She married Robert Officer, had two children, Nancy and Steven. To help support her family, and to support her dream, she worked as a third- and fourth-grade substitute teacher at Wally Smith School in Sparta. College classes had to be squeezed in where they would fit. It took her 20 years. She transferred to Tennessee Technological University in 1964. On Aug. 28, 1965, she finally crossed the stage, becoming the first black student to earn a bachelor's degree from Tennessee Tech. She was 48 years old. She spent the final years of her life as a "homebound" teacher in her native Warren County, teaching handicapped students. Leona died in 1976. At 6 p.m., Thursday, April 16, in the University Center Alumni Lounge, there will be a tribute to Leona Lusk Officer. Her children will accept a plaque from President Angelo Volpe in memory of their mother's hardwon achievements.
