First African Market Fair premiers at Tennessee Tech

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- Gospel singing, African-American art
and West African dancing will highlight the first African Market Fair
at Tennessee Technological University, set for 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Saturday, Oct. 26, in Sherlock Park.
The fair, sponsored by the university's Black Cultural
Center, will feature vendors selling African-American arts and crafts
as well as refreshments and food; art displays; gospel music from the
campus group Divinity and a group from Chattanooga; performances by
Tennessee Tech's West African Dance and Drum Troupe and entertainment
from various local rap and singing groups.
"Anyone who would like to entertain can do so," Anthony
Dunnings, entertainment coordinator for the fair, said. Those
interested can contact Dunnings, Stephen Williams or Michelle Dixon at
372-3392.
Proceeds from the fair go toward the expansion of the Black
Cultural Center. Center director Mayme Martin expects 250 or more
people to arrive from across the Southeast for the event.
"We want to develop a network on campus with other groups
so they can learn more about a different culture," Martin said. "We
want to network with the local community, the state and surrounding
states. We're expecting visitors from Nashville, Chattanooga and even
Atlanta."
According to Martin, being aware and knowledgable about
different cultures can help bring about understanding and respect.
"We want the community to become aware of cultural
diversities that shape us here in Tennessee, just as they shape events
on a more global scale," Martin said.
In case of rain, the fair will be held in the OVC room on
the first floor of the University Center. For more information,
contact the Black Cultural Center at 372-3392.

CHATTANOOGA STUDENT TAKES STAND
IN MLK ORA TORI CAL CONTEST AT TENNESSEE TECH
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (March 21, 1996) - A powerful address on affirmative action
won recognition for Chattanooga's Tonya Brown during a recent Martin Luther King Jr.
Oratorical Competition at Tennessee Technological University.
Brown, a senior-level mechanical engineering student, was one of eight students who took
part in the event, which challenged students to articulate their views on whether affirmative
action is still necessary. The event was sponsored by the university's Black Cultural Center.
In an eight-minute address, Brown traced the introduction of slaves into the American
colonies, their treatment at the hands of white masters and their long struggle for freedom and
equality. With the help of Harriet Tubman, Nat Turner and other visionary leaders, "the battle
of freedom was won," Brown said, "only to start a new battle of togetherness and higher
learning."
It is important to realize that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the amendment one year later
that included the concept of affirmative action came 346 years into the history and experiences
of blacks in this nation, Brown said. "Because of the past, our people are in the worst
economic status in America. We need to finish the fight, to win the prize: to be equal with other
Americans." Affirmative action is a tool in that fight, she said, "because (it) is designed to
minimize the actions of discrimination."
With the legal foundation affirmative action provides, blacks are positioned to use their
personal determination to succeed and, when necessary, fight for the rights that the constitution
guarantees them. "It is up to our generation not only to win a battle, but to win the war for
equality," Brown told students at the event.
"As Maya Angelou says, 'We are the hope and the dream of a slave.' Do not forget your
past for it will keep you pressing on to the future. Remember that like our ancestors, we must
use the tools at our disposal to rise, to succeed and to take our rightful place in corporate
America. Once we have succeeded, affirmative action will no longer be needed."
This marks the fifth year Tennessee Tech has hosted the oratorical competition, which
strives to encourage students to formulate and express well-reasoned stances on issues of
importance to blacks and other minorities.

In her studies, Brown is already providing the leadership and action she calls for. Her
field, mechanical engineering, remains underpopulated with women and minorities, although
recent years have seen that inequality begin to change.
The daughter of Joseph C. and Olivia Brown of Chattanooga, Brown is active in a variety
of campus organizations, including Alpha Kappa Alpha social sorority, the National Society of
Women Engineers, the National Society of Black Engineers, Inter-Varsity Christian
Fellowship and the Black Student Organization. A 1991 graduate of Ooltewah High School,
she plans to work in engineering following her graduation from Tennessee Tech and begin
study for a doctorate in psychology.

Lectur es, discussions and stor ytelling
to highlight Black Histor y Month at Tennessee Tech

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- Parties, discussions about campus
rascism and racial inequality, a gospel concert and an evening with
one of the leading experts of African-American storytelling are just a
few of the numerous events that Tennessee Technological University is
hosting in observance of Black History Month.
The February celebration begins on Tuesday, Feb. 5, with
the first of a four-part series titled "Eyes on the Prize, " which
highlights the birth of the Civil Rights Movement, and will also
feature an art exhibit, a black history quiz bowl and a Valentine's
Day social.

Events are being hosted by the Black Student

Organization, social fraternities and the Black Cultural Center.

Many

of the events will be held in the university's Black Cultural Center,
located in Room 258 of the University Center.
"We want all the students at the university to gain a
better understanding of blacks in this country," said Mayme Martin,
director of the Black Cultural Center.
"We want to help students look toward black awareness in
the future.

We need to look where we came from to understand where

we're going."

Black Cultural Center established at Tennessee Tech
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. --

Tennessee Technological University has

established a Black Cultural Center that students and staff hope will
become a hub of activity for the campus and community.
The center will support black students' educational and social
activities and offer workshops, concerts and other programs to the campus
and community.
More than 1.100-square-feet of conference and study rooms in the
University C~nter, near the heart of the campus, will house the center.
Carpet has been laid, furniture is being collected and the facility should
be fully operational by spring semester.
"I've talked with black students about the center," said Corey
Prince, a junior finance major from Franklin who is president of the Black
Student Organization (BSO).
"I think everyone is excited about it. We really feel positive and
optimistic that we have things going for us.
"It's a place we hope black students will go to become culturally
aware of our heritage and we hope white students and students of other
races will come, too, to study, to attend programs, and to see
black-oriented art and displays about famous black leaders and others who
are making contributions."
Prince said the center will have black-oriented magazines and he
hopes to have a television, VCR and satellite dish to bring in programs
from BET, the Black Entertainment Television network. Study rooms will be
available for student use.

"We hope to create a positive image for our black students and for
other students, as well,

11

Prince said. "We want to to create and strengthen

the bonds between students of all races. Racism somehow occurs because
we're not aware of other races' contributions. With awareness and
understanding, we tend to work together and things are better."
Last year, BSO members surveyed black students about their interest
in a cultural center. The students proposed their idea to the university's
Commission on the Status of Blacks and soon regular planning meetings were
underway.
Presently, a set of procedures for the center, including plans for
how a board of students, faculty and staff will be established to oversee
operations, is ' being reviewed.
"We're feeling our way with this," said Hoyle Lawson, vice president
for student services, "but that's why we have a set of procedures that
outline how the center will operate and how business will be conducted.
"We want it to be a stimulating place for our students," he
stressed, "a place that will support programs and activities for our black
students and provide them with a retreat. We also hope it will foster
better understanding among races."
"Tennessee Tech is a good school with a great study environment, but
apart from academics, there's not a lot here for black students," Prince
said. "One way of overcoming this is to get involved in organizations and
keep busy. The cultural center will be something for us here to answer the
needs of students. Hopefully, it will help keep students here and attract
more."
Lillie Alford, job locator for the university, will direct the
center. She has been studying the way successful cultural centers operate
at Vanderbilt, Purdue and other universities.

"I think one strength of our center will be the tutorial programs to
help students. We're also aiming to bring in speakers and to host concerts
and workshops. The center could be very successful and very beneficial to
both the students and the university as a whole."
In addition to a large social room, the center includes several
smaller areas that will serve as headquarters for the BSO and the
university's chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers.
BSO activities planned for fall semester include an anti-racial
circle on the main plaza. "We plan to invite all organizations that want to
take a stand against racism to meet together to say racism is wrong -- to
take a stand and say we're unified on this," Prince said.
Next semester, the BSO is planning a gospel extravaganza, a panel
discussion on careers by black professionals and, possibly, a black history
quiz bowl open to all student organizations.
