Title

Burnstand [Burnt Stand] Cemetery records

Description

A sample of records from the Burnt Stand Cemetery records from Tennessee Technological University Archives and Special Collections. The Burnstand Cemetery Collection includes maps, photographs, business correspondence, and legal correspondence regarding the relocation of Burntstand Cemetery. The photographs illustrate the former location of Burntstand Cemetery which was behind the east side of the stadium. The maps show the plots that were on Tennessee Tech property and the intended relocation plots at Shipley Cemetery where approximately 170 bodies were moved. The business correspondence necessary for relocating the cemetery is contained in the collection. The papers include correspondence with city, state, and federal agencies. The legal correspondence consists of part of a deed originally signed by Jere Whitson giving clear title of the Burntstand Cemetery Land to Tennessee Tech and laws concerning the management and regulation of cemeteries. Miscellaneous papers from the Percy Priest Reservoir Cemetery Relocation plan were acquired from the U.S. Army Engineer District and were included in this collection because Tennessee Tech officials used them as a guide for the Burntstand project.
